The Google Pixel Fold is a the company’s first foldable smartphone that hits the market in May 2023.

The foldable smartphone is primed to compete with the likes of Samsung Galaxy Fold, Vivo X Fold 2 and the Huawei Mate X.

In a nutshell, it is a dual AMOLED display clamshell, with excellent processor and stunning camera experience that leaves a long lasting impression. Thanks to its durable hinge, improved sensors and impressive battery performance that ensures confidence when handling the device.

Design

The Google Pixel Fold brings to life a Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 lookalike. Its book-like folding mechanism, can survive over 30,0000 seamless open and close session, revealing an immersive 7.6-inches display when unfolded.

This looks decent but smaller that Vivo X Fold 2’s 8.03 inch display. The hinge mechanism built with a multi-alloy steel design enables smooth movement throughout its entire 180° range of motion.

Thus, users can enjoy various flexibility options of the convenient “Table-top mode” or “Flex Mode,” similar to what Samsung offers. This functionality allows users to watch movies or type efficiently with the device half-folded, thus, enhancing the overall user experience.

Compared to other clamshell, the Fold has one of the thinnest profile measuring 158.7 x 139.7 x 5.8 mm in dimensions when unfolded and 139.7 x 79.5 x 12.1 mm when folded.

Additionally, its 283 gram of weight isn’t the lightest but offers portable user experience on the go.

The back of this clampshell which is crafted from polished aluminum material is home to a vertically aligned triple-camera setup, and Google’s G branding.

The build material evokes a sleek and refined aesthetic with matte finish.

Furthermore, the Pixel Fold bags an IP68 water-resistant rating. The book-style device is available in Stormy Black, Sorta Sunny, and Kinda Coral colour options.

 

Display

As earlier mentioned, the inner display features a 7.6-inch AMOLED display with 1840 x 2208 pixels resolution and HDR10+ compliant.

It has a highest brightness mode of 1000 nits and can hit 1450 nits peak brightness, delivering stunning visuals even while under direct sunlight.

On the other hand, the outer display bears a 5.8-inch OLED pocket-friendly display with 1080 x 2092 pixels resolution.

The display supports HDR content with can hit up to 1550 nits peak brightness.

Both displays has a 120Hz refresh rate, and are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus.

 

Camera

Onto the photography department, the Pixel Fold is furnished with a total of five cameras, ensuring well-rounded photography capabilities.

The rear holds a tri-camera lens, with a single front facing camera at the top of the main foldable display and the outer display respectively.

The tri-camera lens on the rear consists of a 48MP wide-angle lens which supports Dual Pixel PDAF, Laser AF, and OIS for excellent low-light performance.

The second is a 10.8MP telephoto lens which supports Dual Pixel PDAF, OIS, and 5x optical zoom for capturing detailed shots and lastly is also a 10.8MP ultrawide lens with 121 degrees field of view, which is perfect for expansive landscapes and group photos.

The inner front-facing hole-punch camera is an 8MP wide selfie camera lens, while the outer screen, is fitted with a 9.5MP wide cover camera.

Lastly, both main and outer camera can record 4K videos. The main camera supports slow Motion recording of 960fps at 720p HD video recording.

 

Hardware and Software

Beneath the chassis, is 5nm Google Tensor G2 chipset featured on Google pixel 7 and Google pixel 7 Pro.

This powerful octa-core processor with 2.85 GHz clock speed, is backed by Mali-G710 MP7 GPU which ensures smooth and seamless user experience.

For storage, the Pixel Fold support up to 12GB of RAM and 512GB of UFS 3.1 built-in storage. On the flip side, it does not support external storage cards.

Moving on to software, the Google Pixel Fold runs on latest version of the company’s mobile operating system, Android 14 OS.

 

Connectivity

The Pixel Fold features a range of connectivity options, such as 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, NFC, Bluetooth 5.2, and USB Type-C 3.2.

 

Battery

The device rocks a 4,821 mAh battery, which is slightly larger than Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Vivo X Fold 2, but falls behind when compared to Tecno Phantom V Fold which comes with 5000mAh battery.

The foldable device supports PD 3.0 Fast Charging technology.

 

Google Pixel Fold Price and Availability

The price of Google Pixel Fold starts at $1,799 and $1,919 for the 256GB and 512GB model respectively.

In Nigeria, the Pixel Fold price will start at about ‎₦965,000.

The device was announced on May 11, 2023 and it’s available for purchase.
