Xiaomi Poco F5

Xiaomi Poco F5 is a performance-centric smartphone with strength in key areas such as design, display, audio, and battery capability.

It’s LiquidCool technology and it’s chipset makes it ideal for avid mobile gamers, who are looking for a smartphone to play their favourite titles, without overheating issues and wouldn’t dip a hole in their pocket.

On the flip side, Poco didn’t improve much with camera hardware while the bloatware-loaded interface is a drag on it.

But in all, the phone still fit as a strong contender in the midrange segment due to lack of compelling options from other smartphone brands.

Design

Xiaomi Poco F5 parades a delicate and trendy design, combined plastic body, boxy framework and flat edges all around.

Since it is carved out of plastic, the phone is quite light-weight and slim too at 181 grams and 7.9mm respectively.

The flat edges make it easy to hold, and the lightweight profile prevents it from feeling too cumbersome.

The back cover wears an eye catching dual-colour gradient with three-dimensional texture effect which cover fingerprint smudges quite well, so kudo for that.

Still on the rear cover, is a three-ring camera deco which is naturally integrated into the body, providing a smooth feel and premium aesthetics.

For placements, the right side of the phone accommodates the volume rocker and power button, which doubles up as the fingerprint scanner for quick and convenient biometrics.

The USB-C port, speaker grille and the SIM card tray rocks the bottom, while the top plays host to the audio jack, speaker grille and IR blaster, so you can use the phone as a TV remote control.

For protection, Poco slaps an IP53 certification which ensure the device is dust and splash resistant but immersion will probably kill it.

The Poco F5 can be snapped in Black, Blue, and White colour finishes. While the white has an Iceflake textured effect with a shade of blue, the black model has carbon-fibre effect with diagonal lines racing around it, but these are all conservative-looking phones.

Display

On the front, Poco has amazingly managed to achieve uniform thin bezels which offers a stunning 93.4% screen-to-body ratio which offers a more complete cinematic view.

Dominating the front is a 6.67-inch AMOLED dot-display with Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels and a pixel density of 395 pixels per inch (ppi), which results in sharp and crystal-clear images.

The display is HDR10+ and Dolby Vision compatible and support 68 billion colours, which implies that content have ultra-vivid colours, sharper contrast, richer details and better colour accuracy.

With 1000 nits of peak brightness, the display is bright enough for both indoor and outdoor use, so you won’t be needing a shadow this time around.

Furthermore, the display has a 120Hz refresh rate for buttery-smooth transition across frames, coupled with a touch sampling rate at 240Hz, and a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection to prevent scratches and dust.

Camera

The weakest link of the Poco F5 is its camera setup, which says a lot but it can still capture very good footage with good amount of detail and depth, in bright environments.

Just like the Pro model, the tri-camera array at the back of this device is started with a 64MP main sensor.

It’s an OmniVision sensor, and not a flagship-level Samsung or Sony alternative.

As such, you shouldn’t expect sterling lowlight performance as well as shakes handling, when compared to better fitted alternatives.

However, the 8MP ultra-wide sensor and 2MP macro sensor are underwhelming.

While the ultra-wide lacks detail and colour accuracy, the macro on the other hand, is incapable of getting close-up shots.

On the bright side, the camera at up to 4K resolution at 30 frames per second.

With optical image stabilization (OIS) and phase detection autofocus (PDAF) present,  no need to worry about shaky hands.

On the front, is a 16MP front-facing camera that captures great shots in bright environments, but in low-light, you’ll need to fire up the front flash.

Though the camera support different modes and filters, 1080p video recording can be captured at 30 frames per second.

Hardware and Software

Under the hood, the Poco F5 ship in the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 chip seen in Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Turbo.

The 4nm octa-core processor coupled with Adreno 725 graphics processor can handle high frame rate while still maintaining its cool, thanks to its efficient heat management which is powered by Xiaomi’s LiquidCool Technology 2.0.

For storage and RAM, it comes with either an 8GB or 12GB of RAM options while the storage is hinged to 256GB of UFS 3.1 interface.

However, while the RAM supports up to extra 3GB of virtual RAM, the on-board storage is non expandable.

Moving on to the software, the Xiaomi Poco F5 boots on its custom MIUI 14 based on Android 13 operating systems.

Furthermore, Poco promised two years of major OS updates and three years of security patches.

Connectivity

For connectivity, the Poco F5 supports dual SIM functionality coupled with blazing fast 5G network.

Others include WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, GPS, NFC an unlike the Pro, it also supports 3.5mm audio jack.

Battery

Poco pumped in a large 5000mAh battery inside.

Due to its super power-efficient chipset, the battery life can last more than a day on a single charge.

However, its 67W wired SuperVOOC charging brick can juice your device from 1-100 in less than 50 minutes.

Xiaomi Poco F5 Price and Availbility

The price of Xiaomi Poco F5 starts at $410. In Nigeria, the Poco F5 cost about ₦182,000.

The smartphone was announced on March 09, 2023 and was made available for purchase on the same day.
